Water leaks? Don't panic, here's what to do!

Water leaking emergencies are one of the most important jobs we handle because we know how quickly a plumbing problem can turn into severe water damage or a completely unlivable situation in a home. When you need an emergency plumber in Jacksonville or the surrounding areas, you just need to pick up the phone and contact us, and we will be there soon.

We want to help you curb those feelings of panic when you have a large plumbing water leak. Here's what you can do when you find that you have leaky pipes or leaky devices.

ONE: turn off the water to the house

You want to stop water damage as soon as possible (as well as wasting water), so the first step to take when you discover a large leak in your home's plumbing is to shut off the water supply. Take some time now to find the position of the valve that closes the water supply. It should be located near the water meter. Turn it until the flow of water stops, and don't turn it back on until the plumbers have given the OK. They will probably take care to turn it back on anyway. Make sure other people in the house know where the valve is in case they are the only ones at home when the problem occurs. (And remember how to turn it: “right, tight, left-handed, loose.” In other words, turn the valve counterclockwise to close it.)

We recommend installing an automatic shut-off valve if your home doesn't already have one; this automatically shuts off the water supply in case of leaks and is useful for periods when no one is at home.

TWO: disconnect electrical appliances

In the event of a huge water leakage problem, we recommend that you shut off the power supply to the whole house through the electrical panel. In most cases, however, only the appliances in the area need to be disconnected, such as lamps. This helps to avoid potential high voltage shocks.

THREE: Remove all valuables in the area

Eliminate anything in the area of the leak that could be damaged by water. If possible, eliminate everything, as this will make it easier for plumbers to take care of the repair work.

FOUR: Call a licensed plumbing contractor

Now that you've stopped more water from escaping into the house, call an emergency plumber. Make sure he is a licensed and insured plumber, as this not only guarantees the best quality repair work but also protects you in the event of damage to the home.

FIVE: Remove as much water as possible

While you wait for the emergency plumbers to catch up with you, dive in and remove any water that has already escaped. Put the towels down to soak up the water or use a mop. You don't want to give water a chance to seep into the building material and create rot and mold. These are difficult to fix, so you want to see it doesn't have a chance to get started.
